Place a “Lost Pet” ad in the Lebanon Reporter 765-482-4650. You may wish to place ads in the newspapers of outlying areas as well.
Put a sign in your front yard that is visible from the street stating your dog/cat is missing, in case someone in the neighborhood finds your pet and goes door to door searching for the pet’s home. Leave food & water outside your home in case your pet comes back.
Call neighboring county humane societies. Many animals are turned in to shelters miles from their owner‛s home. A personal visit is recommended if the pet is not found within a few days or weeks.
Lastly, if you find your lost pet remember to contact everyone. Also, carefully examine your pet for illness or injury.
What to do if you find a stray pet in Boone County:
Take the pet to a veterinarian to have it checked for a microchip.
If a chip is found, the veterinarian can give you the number of the microchip company to contact. Many vets will gladly make the call for you.
Notify HSforBC by e-mail, email@example.com, and include photo of pet; also provide your contact info, date found, nearest intersection where found, collar/tag info, and any distinctive features of the pet.
Post on HSforBC’s Facebook group page.
If no e-mail access, call HSforBC 1-877-HSforBC (877-473-6722) to leave Found Report.
Notify shelters and rescues in surrounding counties.
Make a flyer with a brief description of the pet & your contact info; do not include too much detail, so that if someone claims to own the pet, that person can provide details that others would not have.
Distribute the flyer to local vet clinics, kennels and groomers, and animal-related businesses; most have bulletin boards where you can post your flyer.
Place an advertisement in the Lebanon Reporter, Zionsville Times Sentinel, and the Indianapolis Star. Newspapers will usually print a Found ad for a pet at no cost.
Advertise on the free sites available on the internet:
Screen responses to verify ownership before relinquishing the pet; the owner can tell you the pet’s name and the pet should respond to that name when you use it; the owner should also be able to give you specific details about the pet.
Information on rehoming a pet
Finding a New Home for Your Pet
The Humane Society for Boone County does not have a physical shelter and therefore we are extremely limited on space. We would ask that you consider us as a last option when it comes to rehoming a pet, and instead pursue these other options if you need to find a new loving home for your family dog or cat. Thank you.
Make a flyer with photo & info to post anywhere that will allow you to do so, such as your work, office, church, local stores, local vets, etc.
Put it on any social network sites you use (Facebook, Twitter).
Also, e-mail it to family, friends, co-workers, etc. In the e-mail, ask that everyone who receives your message passes it on to everyone they know.
This information can also be posted on the Humane Society Facebook group if you are a member. If you are not a member of the group, do a quick search for "Humane Society for Boone County" and ask to be added.
